GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR WELLSTRONICS3D RAPID PROTOTYPE DESIGN
As with any type of additive/subtractive manufacturing process, in order to produce a desired product, the design of the product must match the limitations of the process used to produce the part. This is a key concept when using Wellstronics3D as your source for rapid prototyping. All of Wellstronics3D products are manufactured using additive manufacturing, more specifically, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). If the following guidelines are followed when designing the component, the desired outcome of the physical prototype will very closely match the digital file.
LAYER RESOLUTION/LAYER HEIGHT
One of the key processes in 3D printing is the layer thickness of the print. The layer thickness can affect the look of the part, the amount of time required to print the part and most importantly, the physical details of the part (i.e. thinnest wall section that can be printed). At Wellstronics3D, typical layer heights are 0.25mm (0.010”) and 0.33mm (0.013”). Other layer heights can be achieved but this will require extra time.
MINIMUM WALL THICKNESS
FDM extrudes a piece of filament into successive layers to create a physical part. During this extrusion, there are limitations on how thin of a wall this extrusion process can create. In general, the minimum wall thickness any part can have when using Wellstronics3D as your source for rapid prototypes is 1mm (0.039”).
MINIMUM RADIUS (INNER AND OUTER)
The minimum inner and outer radius that can be achieved is approximately 0.9mm (0.035”).
ASSEMBLY SPACING
If attempting to print an assembly on the same print, filler material must fit between adjacent model material walls. To achieve desirable results, the gap between the two adjacent walls must have a minimum thickness of 0.5mm (0.020”).
MAXIMUM PRINT SIZE (BUILD ENVELOPE)
The maximum single piece print size that Wellstronics3D can create is 203mm x 203mm x 152mm (8” x 8” x 6”). However, keep in mind that parts larger than the machine’s build envelope can be split into sections and joined together post printing.
MATERIAL SAVINGS
One way to save money during the prototyping process is to reduce the amount of material needed to produce a part. If a part can be hollowed out, the cost of the prototype will be reduced on larger models because less material will be used during the printing process. If this approach is utilized, keep in mind that the thinnest wall thickness that can be achieved is mentioned in section 2 above. Each print done at Wellstronics3D has the ability to save material depending on the end need of the prototype. If the end use is for touch and feel only, the part can be printed with more of a hollow infill.
